CMS will cover autologous platelet-rich plasma in specific circumstances

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued its final decision memo on autologous platelet-rich plasma.

The quick summary:

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is covered by CMS only for patients who have chronic non-healing diabetic, pressure, and/or venous wounds and when all the following conditions are met:

  • The patient is enrolled in a clinical research study that addresses certain questions and the study uses validated and reliable methods of evaluation.
  • The clinical research study must meet requirements to assess the effect of PRP for the treatment of chronic non-healing diabetic, pressure, and/or venous wounds.
