5010 enforcement moves to June 30

Sorry! I forgot to hit “publish” on this post from last week!

From CMS …

In an announcement, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS) said it will not initiate enforcement action against any non-compliant entities for an additional three (3) months, through June 30, 2012, for updated HIPAA transaction standards (ASC X12 Version 5010, NCPDP Versions D.0 and 3.0).

Health plans, clearinghouses, providers and software vendors have been making steady progress: the Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) program is currently reporting successful receipt and processing of over 70 percent of all Part A claims and over 90 percent of all Part B claims in the Version 5010 format. Commercial plans are reporting similar numbers. State Medicaid agencies are showing progress as well, and some have made a full transition to Version 5010.

CMS ramps up help for 5010 transition

CMS has released tools and information in the past week or so to help with the 5010 transition:

  • The agency has chosen 3M’s ICD-10 Code Translation Tool to convert its own systems, applications and reports to the new codes.
  • Eagerly anticipating, or dreading the change? Download CMS’s timeline widget to keep track of the, well, timeline! The agency has set up other widgets and information to help agencies prepare.
  • And I can’t believe I missed it, but the agency declared two 5010 Testing Days, one in June and one in August.

Test Your Version 5010 Implementation Efforts Today!

The Version 5010 compliance deadline of January 1, 2012, is nearly six months away!  All HIPAA-covered entities should be preparing for this transition, which includes conducting external testing with all trading partners (providers, clearinghouses, and vendors) to ensure timely compliance.
To assist with testing, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), in conjunction with the Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) Program, is holding two National 5010 Testing Days. The testing days will serve as an opportunity for trading partners to further test compliance efforts with the added benefit of live help desk support, and direct and immediate access to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs).

The first National Version 5010 Testing Day is today, June 15, 2011. The other testing day is scheduled for August 24, 2011. We hope all trading partners will participate so that they can have a timely and smooth transition to Version 5010!
These testing days will help facilitate a better understanding of MAC testing protocols and the transition to Version 5010; they are not meant to prohibit trading partners from further compliance testing. All trading partners are encouraged to begin working with their MACS to test transactions as soon as possible.

Keep Up to Date on Version 5010 and ICD-10.

What happens in Vegas, you take to your agency

Last chance for the Coding and Regulatory Symposium!

All of the coding and regulatory education that you learn at the Coding and Regulatory Symposium is too good to keep in Vegas! Attend the class this week, then bring back all kinds of information to share with coders, clinicians, billers, and administrators.

This conference is put on by Selman-Holman Associates. Take a look at just part of the agenda:.

  • April 2011 changes and how they impact your coding and operations
  • Wound care coding: Debridements aren’t surgical wounds, pressure ulcers never go away in coding, but they might in OASIS, and do you use aftercare of surgery (V58.xx) and wound dressing codes (V58.3x) together? These are just some of the confusing topics we’ll clear up.
  • The money follows proper coding. Really. Code by patient acuity and services, and the money will come. Learn the proper way to code and prioritize your codes.
  • HIPAA 5010 Compliance: Have you checked your checklist of where your agency should be in preparation for the changes?
  • Interactive coding both days! Sharpen your coding and OASIS interaction skills.
  • V57: Evil code or often-used friend? It should be a need-to-use code that has many guidelines surrounding its use … learn them and never worry about coding therapy again. Plus: learn the regulatory and billing issues behind it.
  • Documentation! Support your coding and appeal downcoding.

2 days of education for $385! And you’re in Las Vegas!
We’ll see you Jan. 27 and 28!
